Denver has long been a hot bed for music of all genres. Bass music is obviously no exception and Sub.mission has a history of bringing artists that span the entire spectrum of the sound. BASSment Underground has followed suite since its inception and tomorrow night is no exception. After having L-Wiz and the Dirt First crew come through its only right that we return to the Vinyl basement to close out February with the versatile sounds of the one like Doctor Jeep. Unlike the other installments of BASSment Underground, this one is unique because we are coming into this not knowing what type of set the headliner is playing. Not only that, we have New Mexico homie Crix Siaz and Sub.mission residents Subliminal & Ind33p on support. This one is going to be a night to remember and to get you all ready we have everything you need to know in this edition of Hustle Knowledge.
Doctor Jeep is one of those artists that has such an array of sounds in his and styles in his arsenal that sometimes it’s hard to tell what type of set you’re going to see. To understand that you first have to know where the man comes from and how he came to develop such a versatile display of production skills. Andre Lira started getting attention as an eclectic selector while attending college in Boston. Coming at the art of with a palette of sounds ranging from global sounds of funk, dancehall, old-school UK garage, African percussion and more; he took those sounds and blended them with upbeat house and techno. With DJ sets that flawlessly blended the past, present, and future of dance music in some of Boston and New York’s best known clubs, he has proven that he is a true selector by adapting to any crowd at any party and make it his own.
As far as his production goes, Lira’s sound has been described as “a style somewhere between the tropical inclinations of Dutty Artz, the grinding 808 electro of Swamp81, and the breakbeat-heavy sound of 90s UK rave music.” And that couldn’t be more spot on. The 2012 release of the “Turok EP” on the Freshmore label had equal elements of house, trap and breaks while 2013’s “Sphinx EP” on the Hot Mom USA label was his take on dubstep and grime.
2014 saw the release of two EP’s from Doctor Jeep on the Trouble & Bass label. “Vortex” was the EP that felt like “Turok” & “Sphinx” came together to make an amazing collection of tracks that displayed elements of our favorite sounds of house, dubstep, techno, breaks and everything in between while “Angel” is a perfect blend of heavy percussion and bass driven club music that can move any dance floor across the globe.
2015 saw the release of the “Violinz EP” on Tumble Audio and flawlessly brought together the sounds of all his past releases while moving forward and pushing the creative envelope of his sound. In a recent interview with Fat Kid On Fire, Doctor Jeep stated that he has a remix on TUBA out next month for the duo Folding City, an EP with Chaos Clan (a new label from Star Eyes of Trouble & Bass) sometime in the spring/early summer and a collection of new unreleased music in a personal playlist he’s calling “Jeep Tunes 2016” that we all can’t wait to hear. It is without a doubt that Doctor Jeep is going to take us on a spectacular ride across the spectrum of bass music tomorrow night. We simply cannot wait.
Adding to the awesomeness of the night we have long time Sub.mission friend Criz Siaz on support and if you caught his set at Electronic Tuesdays last month you already know he is a bad man on the decks. Also we have veteran Sub.mission resident Subliminal and one of Sub.mission’s newest additions to the residency roster Ind33p. All three of these men are no strangers to the Denver massive and are sure to have us warmed up and ready when Doctor Jeep hits the stage. BASSment Underground is about to go off with a serious bang. Make sure you get your presales to save some money for drinks and check out the full FKOF interview and exclusive mix here. We’ll see you in the dance!
