When it comes to Tuesday nights in Denver, Sub.mission has the game on lock. Each and very week Electronic Tuesdays is showcasing some of the sickest talent in bass music and if you haven’t come out in recent weeks, you’ve been missing out! This past Tuesday night we gathered on the dance floor to embrace the Denver return of long time Sub.mission family, Grimblee along with the Denver debut of Subtle Mind hailing from Los Angeles and it was a night that won’t soon be forgotten. The entire night was comprised of a wide series of sound and offered styles and genres for bass music lovers of every spectrum to enjoy. The vibe was thick, the room as packed, and the sound system was thumping all night long. If you were in attendance, you already know massive Tuesday night was, and if you weren’t able to make it out, we’re here to give you a feel for how the night went in this week’s edition of The Rewind!
Upon doors opening at Cervantes’ Other Side, the Electronic Tuesdays crowd made their way inside early in the night as Sub.mission was hosting giveaways on limited edition grinder cards and discounted deals on ganja-related merchandise to get the 4/20 festivities started properly. It was 8:00pm sharp when this week’s DJ battles took off in full swing featuring selectors: Mudge, Magnum, D0KT3R, & Pocket Rocks. This week’s battle consisted of a diverse range of sounds including Bassline House, Dubstep, Trap, Hip-Hop, and some experimental beat music as well. Each artist made the most out of their 30 minute time slots to showcase their skills and abilities to get the crowd moving early in the night and show what they’re all about. This week’s battle was one of the best that I’d seen at Electronic Tuesdays in recent memory and after an intense battle among the 4 selectors, ‘Pocket Rocks’ beat out the competition to be crowned this week’s winner. His original tunes show an unorthodox approach to bass music and offered a refreshing sound for the crowd to enjoy and I can’t wait to see him make his Electronic Tuesdays return to perform in the April Winners Showcase battle on May 3!

Next up in the rotation on this massive night in sound, it was now time for Subtle Mind to make his 1st ever Denver appearance. Hailing from Los Angeles, Subtle Mind is a dubstep duo consisting of members Austin & Paul and this time around Austin would be holding down the stage in a solo-performance fully reppin’ the Subtle Mind sound. A couple weeks prior to this performance, a friend of mine from Los Angeles had mentioned the boys of ‘Subtle Mind’ and spoke of them in very high regards and I was overly excited to experience the deep, minimal sound live and direct at Cervantes’ Other Side for the Denver debut. Upon taking the stage, Austin spent zero time messing around and began to unleash some serious low-end frequencies that flexed the subwoofers to their limit and rumbled the ground beneath my feet. Everyone that was in attendance was instantly captivated by the weighty sound that was being projected and not a single body was stagnant throughout the entire venue. The set began with a relaxing, meditative approach and transitioned to a more rootsy 140 style toward the end. The set was well refined, soulful, and impossible not to dance to. The majority of the tunes that Subtle Mind performed were new to my ears offered a refreshing approach to dubstep that felt like I was rediscovering the sound all over again for the very first time. It all came back to the vibe and the feeling of low-end frequencies penetrating my body and compelling me to dance to the beat. Various times throughout the set I closed my eyes and found myself fully immersed in the sound and I couldn’t get enough. The lighter crew ignited the dance floor as Subtle Mind proceeded to take us on a voyage through sound and he made a ground-breaking impact in this highly anticipated Denver debut.

As a sea of bass heads flooded the dance floor at The Other Side from front-to-back, it as now time for the main event as Grimblee would be taking the stage to amplify the energy in the room and kick things up a few notches. Having seen Grimblee perform a number of times throughout the years, I knew to buckle up tight and prepare for a set that would be well-rounded and would not be exclusive to a single genre or sound. Dating back to the first time that I saw Grimblee perform at the Sub.mission 6 year anniversary, he has always stood out as one of the most forward-thinking and innovative talents in bass music. The Utah-based DJ/Producer has a style that is uniquely his own and every time that you see him perform, he’s got something completely new and original up his sleeves. He will always keep you guessing and will undoubtedly have you on edge from the moment he takes the decks, all the way ‘til the very end of his set. This past Summer in June, Grimblee performed at the highly renowned Sonic Bloom Music Festival and delivered one of my personal favorite sets of the entire weekend and I couldn’t wait to see him destroy the dance floor in the intimacy of Cervantes’ Other Side. On Tuesday night he began his set with a deeper, low-end approach and further demonstrated his versatility as a DJ before transitioning into his signature upbeat, and high-energy style. Among the extensive catalogue of tunes that he played out, some of my personal favorites included ‘Wild Vine’ by Grimblee & Ganja White Night, along with dance floor banger, ‘I Got Trust Issues’ that he released under his experimental alias, ‘Hecka’. On Tuesday night he performed one of the most well balanced and versatile sets that I’ve ever seen and by the time it was all said and done, I only wanted more. Whether he’s throwing down in front of a sea of people at a music festival or getting up-close-and-personal at a small venue, Grimblee is sure to take you on a complete musical journey with plenty of twists and turns so fasten you dancing shoes and get don’t get caught slippin!

Finishing off the night and providing some much needed decompression from such a diverse night in sound, it was now time for Sub.mission resident DJ, ‘Bean’ to take the stage and close out with a bang! No stranger to Cervantes’ Other Side, Bean is a name that has become a staple throughout the entire Denver Dubstep scene and he’s been putting in work for many years now. Widely known as one of the early members of the Sub.mission crew and a true Sub.Soldier advocating the ‘Moving People Through Sound Not Hype’ moniker, Bean has emerged as one of the sickest talents throughout Colorado and has proven to be a true force to be reckoned with when he’s behind the decks. His next-level track selection and flawless mixing abilities are what set him apart from the average DJ and his bass-driven sound is unmistakable. His set on Tuesday night consisted of his signature 140 style with tunes like Quantum Soul’s ‘Strong Root’, Proxima’s ‘Trapped’ and even some UK Grime by the likes of ‘D Double E’s –Badman! Regardless of your previous knowledge on the one like ‘Bean’, he’s one of the most exciting recent additions to the Sub.mission roster of resident DJ’s and he’s one that you want to keep close eyes on!
