We Give Thanks and Blessing
Review
The early days of sound system, and still so in many circles, were not about mixing as a DJ does, but about pure selection, and the quality of the tunes being selected. Quality of sounds over quantity of sounds made the biggest dubs. Sound system music has been described as needing three essential elements; Bass, Pace, and Space. Green King Cuts finds a perfect balance of these elements with the labels seminal release "Early Days Dub". The title tune, crafted by C-Side (Chris Iona), is a vibe packed anthem for selectors across the globe. The intro seduces you with sensual alto sax played by close friend of the Green king Family. The track has fundamental dub elements such as spring reverb, and eventually a very fitting sample from one of the most respected voices of sound system culture, Jah Shaka. As the track progresses, the horns guide you along while the bass does the work. Shaka goes on to explain the call and response process between a tracks visionary and the engineer at the controls. Proper roots n culture on this one, roll up and get lost in the bass meditation.
On the flip, Cessman sprinkles his special blend of herbs and spices pon di track. The shimmering horns create the type of atmosphere that will have you closing your eyes and throwing gun fingers. This one is absolutely made for the dancehall. All the layers are perfectly cured and ready for the big stacks. It's not often that a record comes out, where it will be this hard to decide which side to play, as they are both equally well produced. With perfect timing, the man like Cessman, lets this track breathe. Plenty of space is created for the absorption of the sample and the knowledge that it shares. This is truly inspiring music that will have you diving into your own studio as soon as you get the chance.
Massive respect to Green King Cuts, for creating this plate. A label’s first release is very important, and the tunes presented here send a very clear and obvious message that, high quality sound system music is what they will be pushing. Using Beau at 1087 Mastering reinforces the all round quality of this release. Shout out to Jake Hennessy and Liam Conway the CEO ’s for putting this together. Release date is scheduled for Nov 25 and it will be distributed and available through Unearthed Sounds.
