As the month of January’s Electronic Tuesdays came to a close, Sub.mission sent us off with a bang as we welcomed back St. Louis’ very own Bommer for a headlining performance at Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom. A pleasant switch-up from the weekly throwdowns at The Other Side, this week’s show was hosted on the main side of Cervantes’ to properly accommodate the bass heavy madness that would ensue. The dance floor was packed, the energy was high, and the entire night’s lineup was stacked from top to bottom. Here’s the rewind!
The night began at 8:00pm sharp as local acts B34N5, GBP, Super Duper, & Viscaria took the stage to duke it out in this week’s DJ Battles. A sea of both new and familiar faces made their way to the dance floor as soon as doors opened and prepared to embrace a massive night in sound on this fine Tuesday night. Each DJ made the most out of their 30 minute time slots to get the crowd moving while showcasing their unique styles and abilities in hopes to lock down the win and advance to the next round of the competition. Once again, this week’s battles demonstrated how truly talented the local scene throughout Colorado is and each DJ held their own behind the decks. There isn’t a single doubt that this week’s battle was one of the best that we’ve seen so far and ultimately ‘GBP’ emerged as this week’s winner. Congratulations to GBP for snatching the victory and winning over the crowd with his low-end, minimal style that rumbled the dance floor. Catch GBP making his Electronic Tuesdays return to square-up against the fellow battle winners of this month in the January Winners Showcase on February 9! Stay tuned!

Following the DJ Battles, it was now time for newly added Sub.mission resident ‘AOWL’ to take the stage and amplify the energy in the room in his residency debut performance. Over the years, the young talent has become a truly integral part of the dubstep community throughout Colorado and when he was announced as one of the new additions to the Sub.mission roster of resident DJ’s, I couldn’t have been more excited. Not only is he a true force to be reckoned with behind the decks as a DJ, but his innovative abilities as producer have also been turning heads and gaining massive momentum as well. On Tuesday night AOWL made a statement in his residency debut and made his presence felt as he held it down on the primary support slot for Bommer. The set he performed was packed with both new and original material and he got the entire audience bouncing from beginning to end. Tunes like 16 Bit’s ‘FRZR9000’, Emalkay’s ‘When I Look At You’ , Trolley Snatcha’s ‘Sound Champion’ and AOWL’s collab ‘Impregnate’ featuring fellow Sub.mission resident Swayd ignited the crowd and set the tone for the remainder of the night. In case you missed it, yesterday AOWL dropped his fresh new Sub.mission podcast and it’s packed with heat! Check out the PODCAST HERE and be sure to keep close eyes on AOWL this entire year, as he’s one of the sickest talents pushing the limits of underground dubstep with no sign of slowing down.

Next up it was the moment we had all been waiting for, the Mile High return of Saint Louis’ very own BOMMER! Having seen Bommer perform at the ‘Bust A Gat Tour’ at Electronic Tuesdays alongside Cubs & Crowell this past June, I knew to buckle up tight and to fasten my dancing shoes because the dance floor was about to get annihilated. Similar to the explosives that his name suggests, Bommer’s energy ignited the crowd and took Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom by storm. Kicking off the set with his tune ‘Scattered’ featuring Jphelpz & Shiverz, the one like Bommer made it clear that his .mission was to make you move and take you on a journey of skull-crushing sound. Cohesive, multi-layered mixing styles combined with next level track selection combined to make Bommer’s headlining performance one of the sickest, and most well rounded sets I’ve seen in recently. His transitions were flawless and his double-drops were packed with surprises. The tunes spanned from original classics like Rusko’s ‘Go-Go-Gadget’ , all the way to several versions of Bommer’s modern day dance floor bangers like ‘Nah Nah VIP’ , ‘Bust A Gat’ , and of course, ‘Yasuo!’ If you’ve been keeping up with the current U.S. underground dubstep circuit over the last few years, you already know that Bommer has been making quite an impact and his tunes have been rinsed on some of the largest platforms stateside and internationally too. With massive releases on labels such as SMOG, Prime Audio, Subquake, & more, under his belt, Bommer’s sound has been making serious waves and on Tuesday night he reminded Denver what he’s all about! There wasn’t a single body in the venue that wasn’t raging and if you didn’t make it out to see Bommer crush the dance, you definitely missed out! The roar from the crowd was undeniable and the inevitable mosh pits that he instigated were a common theme from the moment he took the stage. A mild ringing in my ears combined with a sore neck from head-banging the entire night are a clear indicator at how the night went and I am still in recovery mode. Big ups to Bommer for making us break a sweat and overwhelmingly satisfying my bass music needs on this fine Tuesday night!

Closing out the night it was now time for Sub.mission resident DJ Dillard to step up to the plate and institute a lesson in true sound system culture. Offering a refreshing decompression session to follow up Bommer’s upbeat energy, Dillard took the decks and slowed down the pace with his meditative bass weight that shook the crowd. No stranger to Electronic Tuesdays, Dillard has become a personal favorite over the years and every time that I’ve seen him perform he’s constantly bringing something new to the table while pushing the limit of his signature, deep style. Dillard’s sound is characterized by heavy bass lines that rumble the ground beneath you while penetrating your body. Giving us a little glimpse into the Electronic Tuesdays 5 year anniversary coming up in a couple days, Dillard began his set with Commodo’s ‘Free Focus’ remix he brought the classic, reminiscent UK vibes to finish out the night strong. Another one of my favorite moments of his set was when he threw down Skream’s ‘Oskillatah’ and had the crowd bouncing back and forth. To hold the title of a Sub.mission resident DJ means that you must demonstrate consistency and persistence with your sets and Dillard does exactly that with each and every performance. His track selection is extensive and his mixing style is silky smooth. Regardless of the time slot or setting, Dillard has what it takes to move the crowd and make a lasting impression on his audience. If you were feelin’ the vibes that Dillard brought forth a few nights ago, be sure to catch Dillard live in the mix on February 16 when he closes out then night for Headhunter at Electronic Tuesdays!
