As the month of April comes to an end, Sub.mission presented us with a special edition dual-venue throwdown at Electronic Tuesdays to close out with a bang! Performing on the main venue side of Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom we had the likes of Subliminal, Gunkst, Andrew Luce, and headliner Hudson Mohawke live in the mix. On The Other Side, we enjoyed sets from a series of local talent performing in the DJ battles as well as DMVU, Ind33p, and headliner Ethan Glass making his Denver debut. With 2 full rooms of music to choose from, the variety was endless and there was top-notch bass music being performed from beginning to end. Here’s the rewind!
I spent the majority of then night amongst the crowd at The Other Side as I made my way to the dance floor early in the night as soon as doors opened at 8:00pm. Every week the local DJ battles are Electronic Tuesdays are a chance to see some of the sickest upcoming local talent from throughout the state and I always make an effort to catch all of the acts that are competing. This week battlers ‘In Motion’, ‘Gahlaktus’, ‘The Blotter Bunch’, and ‘Wrek Dubz’ took to the stage to show the crowd what they’re all about and set the tone early in the night. This week’s battles featured a vast array of electronic music styles ranging from Glitch Hop, Minimal 140, Aggressive Dubstep, and even some Hip-Hop performances with live vocals being performed. Each act demonstrated their unique talents and abilities and made the most out of their 30-minute time slots in hopes to advance to the next round of the competition. After one of the closest battles to ever be performed at Electronic Tuesdays, Wrek Dubz beat out the competition to be crowned this week’s winner! His upbeat sound erupted the crowd with energy and had the early E Tuesdays crowd skankin’ out in the front row and the night had just begun. Be sure to catch Wrek Dubz making his return to Cervantes’ Other Side next week to perform in the April Winners Showcase battle to face-off against the fellow battle winners of the month of April!

Next up in the night’s rotation, it was now time for Damnesia-Vu (DMVU) to take the decks and take us on a musical journey packed with new sounds and a refreshing change of pace. I must say, if there’s truly one artist that is reinventing the game and pushing the boundaries of bass music with each and every production, it’s DMVU. Over the years that I’ve been living in Denver and attending shows on a regular basis, I have been able to see the constant evolvement and progression of DMVU and it’s been quite the journey. His sound is uniquely his own and he harnesses and completely original style that cannot be imitated. If you’ve ever seen him perform, you know that no 2 performances are the same and you can always expect a set packed with plenty of twists and turns that will keep you busy on the dance floor. Having just seen DMVU perform last week in the DJ battles as he performed under his more instrumental alias ‘Pocket Rocks’ I was looking forward to his Electronic Tuesdays return to see what he had in store this time around. He started his set with a smooth and subtle approach that had heads nodding and feet moving. As a common stalker of DMVU’s Soundcloud account, I’ve been in tune with a lot of the more Hip-Hop and soulful soundscape that he is constantly developing and on Tuesday night we heard a generous amount of fresh new material played out. Among the heads in the crowd on this massive Tuesday night was the one and only ‘Kruza-Kid’ from The Mile High Sound Movement. Widely known as a true staple in the Colorado music scene for spitting conscious raps with a fresh approach to free-styling vocals, Kruza Kid couldn’t resist the urge to join his fellow Mile High Sound Movement family on stage and he decided to snatch the microphone and lay down some vocals over the beats that DMVU was kickin’. If you haven’t been keeping up with the one like DMVU, be sure to keep your eyes peeled and your ears open as this is one emerging talent that can’t be slept on!

Following DMVU’s set, Ethan Glass took the stage in his highly anticipated Denver debut. The crowd made their way toward the front of the venue and gathered to witness this first time appearance in the intimacy of Cervantes’ Other Side. Hailing all the way from Virginia, Ethan Glass is also a talent that has been making some serious waves and standing out with his unconventional approach to bass music. His experimental sound is heavily rooted in Hip-Hop influences and low-end ‘Trap.’ From the moment that he took the stage, the entire crowd was ignited with energy as Ethan Glass’ next level track selection and flawless mixing abilities served as a catalyst for the audience to get low on the dance floor. Having spoke with Mr. Glass prior to his performance on Tuesday night, he informed me that the vast majority of the tunes that the would be performing were comprised of an arsenal of original material as well as new and exclusive tunes from producers such as ‘Sayer’ who I am also a big fan of. During the entirety of Ethan Glass’ performance, I found myself dancing non-stop and there wasn’t a stagnant body throughout the entire venue. Being aware of his crowd and the affinity that Denver has for old-school Dubstep, Ethan Glass threw down Coki & Benga’s classic ‘Night’ and had the entire crowd going bonkers! After Tuesday night’s performance, I definitely foresee bright future for this emerging talent and I see his groundbreaking style fitting in seamlessly at Emissions Festival in a couple weeks. If you’ll be in attending Emissions, make sure to catch Ethan Glass live in the mix! I can assure you that you won’t be disappointed!

Once Ethan Glass’s set was over, I headed over to the main side of Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom to see what Hudson Mohawke would be bringing to the table. The Scottish-born DJ/Producer has been a huge influence in today’s bass music scene as his multi-faceted productions catch the ears of listeners from all ages and backgrounds. Highly renowned for his work alongside ‘Lunice’ as bass music duo- ‘TNGHT’ and his contributions to Kanye West’s label ‘Good Music’ , Hudson Mohawke is a talent that has no limit. The crowd was full of a diverse range of enthusiasts that came out to witness this intimate set and the vibe was thick. His set further demonstrated how well-rounded he is as a DJ as he tapped into some of his 808 Trappy style along with Hip-Hop and some more experimental styles as well. Among the variety of tunes that he performed on this set, some of my favorites were when he dropped Rustie’s ‘After Light’ along with his own originals ‘Fuse’ & ‘Goooo’. After much anticipation and speculation as to what a live set from Hudson Mohawke would sound like, I was glad to finally have been able to cross him off my list of must-sees and he definitely made an impact on this massive edition of Electronic Tuesdays.
