As the month of August quickly draws to a close, I take some time to reflect on the truly massive performances that Sub.mission has presented us with as we close out the summer season. August brought forth huge internationally renowned headliners by the likes of Swindle, Flava D, Silkie, and most recently, Lost City comprised of Noah D & No Thing from Babylon System. The amount of talent that came through each week is truly remarkable and to say that Denver is ‘spoiled’ when it comes to the bass music scene that we have would be a complete understatement.
This past Tuesday night also served as a prime showcase of the highly talented local scene that is putting on throughout the Colorado scene and far beyond. Over the last 4+ years Sub.mission has transformed ordinary Tuesday nights into one of the sickest parties in the Mile High City and served as a platform for both established and upcoming artists to play their tunes in front of an open minded and receptive audience.
The night kicked off with the weekly DJ battles as local DJ’s/Producers Contra Scandal, Berrik, & Milky Dubz took the stage to make the most out of their time slots and express their sound and show what they’re made of. This week’s battle was a very enjoyable one and was a well balanced showcase of the talented artists that make up the bass music scene in Colorado on a local scale. After a heated-battle among the 3 selectors, Berrik ended up winning over the crowd with his upbeat style and was crowned the winner of this week’s clash. Over the last few years I have seen Berrik perform a handful of times and his evolution as both a DJ and a Producer is incredible. Keeping true to his underground roots, Berrik is constantly pushing the envelope and raising the limits on his productions and live performances and has emerged as one of my select favorites in Denver. As I looked into the crowd I saw a sea of both new and familiar faces and the dance floor grew in numbers as it was time for the one like Buttah to take the stage. Having seen Buttah perform at Electronic Tuesdays and at Sub.mission warehouse parties, I knew to expect a quality performance packed with DNB and UK Dubstep influences. Sure enough, Buttah took the stage and spent zero time messing around as he unleashed banger after banger to amplify the energy in the room. Buttah’s dynamism with Drum & Bass and Dusbtep make him a versatile talent and is a performer that always keeps his selection fresh. The crowd was vibing and the tone for the remainder of the night had been set. Just as he was closing out his set into his final tune of the night, Buttah closed out his performance with a bang and masterfully threw down J:Kenzo’s sound system thumper ‘Depth Charge’ and erupted the dance floor. Big ups to Buttah!

Next up it was time for Sub.mission resident DJ CurlyOne to take the decks and play the role of primary support for Lost City. No stranger to Electronic Tuesdays and Cervantes’ Other Side, CurlyOne is a true staple in the bass music scene throughout Colorado and is well known for his DJ’ing abilities and multi-facted musical background. When I got word that CurlyOne was going to be performing and Old School set this past Tuesday night I was both excited, and a bit puzzled. CurlyOne is a true weapon of all trades and has roots that run deep, ranging from Jungle, Hip-Hop, Drum & Bass, Dubstep, & more… To my delight, this past Tuesday night the Dub Cartel Don threw down and old school dubstep tunes that flexed the sound system at The Other Side and there was no better man to set the tone for Lost City.
Classic tunes such as Skream’s ‘Blipstream’ set off the crowd and the appreciation was felt with a screaming crowd and hands waving high in the air. Whenever you see CurlyOne perform you can expect a fair amount of classic material blended with current dance floor anthems as well. CurlyOne’s skill and knowledge behind the decks is undeniable and he consistently brings the heat, regardless of the time slot or setting.

Now that the crowd had been properly warmed up CurlyOne’s set, it was time for the highly-anticipated Denver debut of Lost City comprised of deadly DNB duo Noah D + No Thing from Babylon Sound. Both of these artists are true living legends and are considered pioneers in the underground realm of bass music and to see them perform a headlining set in the intimacy of Cervantes’ Other Side was a very special treat for those in attendance. With nearly 2 decades of DJ experience under their belts, Lost City kicked a true lesson in the roots and foundation of the true Junglist sound system culture and made a statement to close out the final Electronic Tuesdays of August with a bang. Thanks to crews like Recon DNB and Reload Productions, Denver has an established fan base of Drum and Bass enthusiasts and there were dozens of them in attendance at this week’s throwdown. Both the new generation and old school heads gathered in appreciation to embrace a highly rare and special set that won’t soon be forgotten! Since the tune was released, I’ve been rinsing their recent remix of Truth’s Undeniable non-stop and to see it played out live and set off the crowd with no shortage of head-banging and dancing feet. The dynamic duo that is Lost City held nothing back this past Tuesday night and provided platform to surrender myself to authentic bass music and get lost in an upbeat performance that was nothing short of legendary.
