As the month of September’s Electronic Tuesdays draw to a close, there was no better way to send us into the month of October than with a sold out show featuring headlining performances from dubstep heavy hitters JuJu & Midnight Tyrannosaurus. Over the years these 2 artists have been rumbling dance floors and making some serious waves on both a nationwide and international scale and this past Tuesday night they showed Denver what their skull-crushing sound is all about! The anticipation and excitement going into Tuesday night’s show was at an all time high as I had seen Midnight Tyrannosaurus crush the dance floor at Cervantes Other Side as he held down the stage alongside Deep Medi veteran Commodo* following the Sub.mission 7 year anniversary. To add to the excitement, Los Angeles’ very own JuJu would be making his first ever Denver appearance and together they put on one of the rowdiest Electronic Tuesdays that I have ever witnessed. Here’s the rundown….
The show began at 8:00pm sharp and the Electronic Tuesdays crowd came out early and found their home right in front of the speakers during the entire duration of the night. The audience was comprised of a large sea of both new and familiar faces gathered on the dance floor with an immense vibe and energy that I had never seen before. Everyone in attendance knew exactly why they were there and did their best to prepare themselves for a massive night in hard-hitting sound performed by some of the best local and nationwide talent all under the same roof. In Finem, Gorilliphant, Counterfeit Rainbow, & Mostro were this week’s competitors in the DJ battles and I must say that this week’s battle was one of the best and most impressive battles that I have seen to date. Colorado really does have one of the best local scenes in the nation and we are reminded of this every single Tuesday night. The selectors spent zero time messing around and got straight to business and made the most out of their 30 minute time slots to win over the crowd and showcase their skills in hopes to advance to the next round of the competiton. This week’s battlers threw down sets comprised of heavy dubstep influences and set the tone for the night flawlessly and after a heated battle among the 4 acts, dubstep duo Counterfeit Rainbow snatched the victory and were crowned this week’s winner! Big ups to Counterfeit Rainbow for bringing the heat! Honorable mention to In Finem, Gorilliphant, & Mostro for also putting on amazing sets to kick the night off!

Following the opening DJ Battles, it was now time for Sub.mission resident DJ Swayd to take over the decks and amplify the energy in the room as the primary support slot for JuJu and Midnight Tyrannosaurus. Personally, I couldn’t think of a better supporting act to perform on this night and once again Swayd proved why he is one of the most exciting emerging talents from the Denver dubstep scene and that he is a true force to be reckoned with when he is in the mix! I still remember seeing Swayd hold it down in his 1st ever live performance when he opened up for Sadhu & Bloodthinnerz back in January of 2014 and from that moment I knew he was an artist to keep close eyes on. Fast-forward to 2 years later and the one like Swayd has gained massive momentum for his original tunes and gained the support of some of the industry’s top talents like Cubs, Bommer, Jphelpz, Coffi, Dubloadz, AOWL, and many more! To see the evolution of Swayd over the years has been quite the journey and to see him perform is always a treat! When Swayd takes the decks, he gets in the zone and his explosive energy is known to set off any crowd! Original tunes like his collaboration w/ AOWL ‘Impregnate’ and ‘Back Off’ were among the crowd favorites and Swayd took things to a whole new level on Tuesday night. Regardless of your previous knowledge on the one like Swayd, he is definitely an artist that you want to keep tabs on! Undoubtedly one of the sickest talents to emerge from Colorado with no sign of slowing down!

As the crowd filled the room from front to back I received word that the night’s show was completely sold out and that was evident when I looked out into a storming crowd that filled the room from front-to-back just in time for the highly anticipated Dener debut of Los Angeles’ very own JuJu! Boasting massive releases on Never Say Die’s newest imprint ‘Black Label’ , Juju is one of the game’s top talents and on Tuesday night he took no prisoners. From the moment he stepped up to the stage JuJu erupted the crowd with waving hands high in the air combined with imminent cheering from the audience. His entire set was packed with new and exclusive material that took the crowd by storm and no one was ready for the complete madness that ensued. My personal favorite part of JuJu’s set was when he ruthlessly dropped Phiso’s & Aweminus dance floor banger ‘Sheer Cold’ and exploded the dance floor.

Now that we had been properly warmed up by such insane performances to start off the night, it was now time for the main event featuring a headlining set from the man himself, Midnight Tyrannosaurus! Having seen Midnight T perform a handful of times in the past, I knew to buckle up tight and brace myself for a set that was going to be incredibly rowdy and packed with gut-bursting sound. Needless to say, Midnight T brought the bass harder than ever before and gave us exactly what we came for! Over the years Midnight Tyrannosaurus has set the standard with his productions and I would definitely consider him to be one of the most consistent and innovative artists on the scene today. His tunes are comprised of his unique intro’s and signature vomit-inducing dubstep drops that often make you question your sanity as the filth from his tunes is truly in a league of its own. The Florida-based producer is renowned for his hard hitting sound and has gained support from some of the biggest names in bass music such as Excision, Cookie Monsta, The Frim, and Figure to only name a few. There isn’t a single doubt that Midnight Tyrannosaurus is at the forefront of the underground dubstep movement and on Tuesday night he unleashed some serious madness and annihilated Cervantes’ Other Side. His distinct sound design and crunchy sound instigates some of the rowdiest of crowds and the series of moshpits that ensued during his set were truly inevitable. Just as I thought the crowd couldn’t possibly get any crazier, toward the end of his set he kicks things up a notch and grabs the microphone to instruct the crowd to take part in the infamous ‘Wall of Death’ ! No one was ready for the madness that came afterwards and he had the audience thinking twice before risking a body part in the epicenter of such rowdiness as he dropped his ‘Deathasaurus Remix’ of Squnto & Code: Pandorum’s tune ‘Wall of Death.’ The true soldiers engaged at the frontlines of the craziness while the rest stood back and cherished their safety.

All-in-all this past Tuesday night was a true demonstration of some of the top talents on both a local and nationwide scale that are pushing the boundaries of bass music and proved how the scene is alive and thriving more than ever before. At a time when publications and artists chant that ‘Dubstep is Dead’ I look at nights like this and laugh at how they couldn’t possibly be more wrong. There is nothing dead about a sold out crowd full of bass music enthusiasts surrendering themselves to hard-hitting beats and rhythms. Big ups to everyone that made it out and took part in such a massive throwdown that won’t soon be forgotten!
