This Friday the 30th, the dubstep community of Denver gets spoiled yet again with a perfectly curated Halloween party at the Fusion Factory. In proper holiday spirit, Sub.Mission welcomes the deliciously spooky sounds of Nomine & Goth Trad. While Goth Trad has blessed Denver before with his Japanese sonic wizardry, this show marks the official debut of the one called Nomine. For those who haven’t been listening, Nomine has been making waves on the infamous Tempa and recently unleashed his debut album Inside Nomine. With both producers boasting a fat collection of sinister productions, this after-hours Sub.Mission party is all set to keeps it creeps.
Few and far between producers out there can tell a story like Goth Trad. His music is a dynamic narrative: meditative and cathartic. Evolving skankers move the body as glitchy percussion and elusive guitar lines provide cerebral appeal. Speeding bells mimic the chaos of a rapid strobe light and pulsing subs vibrate the soul. Put simply, his music is straight up dubstep; however, his production skills coupled with his story-telling ability set up the listener for transcendental experiences. His album New Epoch served as my personal bridge to the Deep Medi world and the powerful cast of producers within. Every song on the album is so on point, lethal yet reflective. His forthcoming Deep Medi release, which coincidentally drops on the 30th, features the pleasant skanker “Sinker” along with the long awaited cosmic stepper “Sunbeam VIP”.
As if Goth Trad weren’t enough to satisfy your Halloween ears, wait until you hear the earth shattering sounds of Nomine. A veteran to the UK rave legacy, the Nomine project began in 2012 with his mighty Jahpan release on Dubzilla Recordings and has ever since held a dominant presence amongst the Tempa family. From forward thinking, sparse techno to minimal, tribal dubstep to ravey, old-school jungle beats, he covers a wide spectrum of UK bass music. Archaic and primal, his music focuses on the power of tasteful repetition and bass heavy vibrations. Showing off his production expertise with perfectly crafted percussion, his arrangements tap right into the source, summoning the primitive beast within. Tribal chants and Buddhist samples offer a touch of heady, as acid synths and ravey piano licks serve as a nod to the old school. While his releases are massive, I find Nomine’s music is best suited to be experienced in the form of a mix (which contain nearly all original material). Superb track placement and mixing result in a selection of tunes whose whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Conceptually captivating samples add a sense of wonder to his mixes as he traverses across tempos to lure you into a dreamscape. Each song has something unique to add while the overall narrative remains uninterrupted.
While last year’s Halloween bash was one for the books, Sub.Mission has outdone themselves this year. Nomine’s debut is sure to rattle prehistoric bones, and the mighty Goth Trad has never disappointed with his handful of legendary outings in Denver. Both producers have that “special” factor to their music to make the creepy, rumbling bass music of the evening that much more memorable. Between freaky costumes, meditative music, and the dark vibes of the Fusion Factory, this is sure to be the best Halloween party in Denver.
