Wow! Once again, Sub.Mission put together an outright naughty warehouse party at the Fusion Factory. Featuring the sounds of Deep Medi’s Goth Trad and Tempa’s Nomine, attendees showed up in full Halloween spirit with spooky costumes and freaky dance moves. To make the night even more special, this event featured the best sound system I believe to have heard at a Sub.Mission event. The legendary Basscouch sound system, which recently ravished festivals such as Symbiosis Gathering and Burning Man, delivered 30,000 watts of clean, crisp bass. Superb beats, experimental sonic architecture, and physically vibrating low-frequencies resulted in an unreal night of music.
               
Starting off the night, local DJ Gumshoe set the tone with a choice selection of Halloween-esque tunes. After Gumshoe gave the Basscouch system an intial flexing, the Albuquerque DJ/producer Crix Saiz threw down a set that contained no shortage of vinyl bust-outs and original productions to get the party going as more and more dancefloor soldiers trickled in. Just as the clock struck midnight and the Halloween feels sunk in, the UK legend Nomine took the decks for the very first time in Denver. Throwing down a 2 hour set that kept it fresh with a nice combination of dubstep, drum & bass, grime, and slower tempo exploration, Nomine unleashed a ridiculous amount of unreleased material, including his unreleased remix of J Kenzo’s Ruffhouse and VIP cuts of Nomine originals Blind Man and Nomine’s Chant. His set was nothing short of a spiritual experience, as he lured you into a dreamscape of hollow kicks and uncomfortably massive sub-bass.

Next, hailing from Japan, the Denver favorite Goth Trad came out slinging with a slew of heavy hitters. As he moved his way through the Goth Trad classics, he showed off his experimental sound design and next-level mixing abilities, chopping up and mixing segments with incredible prowess. There was no shortage of bewildered faces as he dropped sounds that can only be described as “filthy” or “not from this world”. Closing out with the incredibly touching Babylon Fall, the spaceship ride came to an end as the crowd came together for the perfect, feel-good ending to his set.

Closing out the night, local bad man Caustik kept the party going with his, as always, sublime track selection and mixing. Comfortable in his element, Caustik kept the loyal, devoted crowd moving despite weary legs and baggy eyes. Reluctant to call an end to the night, I left the Fusion Factory feeling not depleted (as my body surely felt), but inspired to continue to take part in nights like this. Denver is incredibly lucky to be able to witness such talent on such an amazing system with such amazing people. The energy in that room was live! And as people lost themselves in the dance, there was still that characteristic Denver feel as people were just as conscientious of others as they were their own personal enjoyment. While we may not know when the next time there will be a dubstep Basscouch experience, here is a picture of the sound system for us to drool over for the time being. Thank you to all those involved!
