Sub.mission's newest night, Standard Saturdays, focuses on bringing underground music back to the forefront of Denver's electronic scene in the SoCo Club district downtown. Working together with two of our favorite crews, Recon and Language Denver, Standard Saturdays will be happening every Saturday of the month at Bar Standard. Recon and Language will be bringing through Drum and Bass and Jungle, and Sub.mission will continue to focus on Dubstep and other forms of cutting edge bass music. The venue itself fits the underground vibe perfectly. Located across the street from Vinyl (and a few buildings down), the room has a very nice sound system: the bass levels do not disappoint, allowing listeners to experience the music properly, both feeling and hearing the high levels of bass which Dubstep and Jungle are both known for. The room itself, long and narrow, helps channel the bass equally throughout the room, allowing everyone to have a good listening experience. For dubstep nights, the room can also be kept very dark, allowing dubsteppas to feel at home with the hoods up, eyes down vibes. For those who want to have a few drinks with their night out, Bar Standard has a main bar, a back bar, and a smoking patio.
To kick off the first official Standard Saturday, Sub.mission had long time crew member and DJ, Bean, get us started. Bean first became involved as a member of Sub.missions street team, and currently helps Sub.mission manage the stage at Electronic Tuesdays events. He also has a crew of his own, Always Be Mixing, which throw rowdy house parties throughout the year. Those who have been attending Electronic Tuesdays for awhile have seen him throw down in the battles numerous times. Well known for being a tough competitor due to his mixing abilities and extensive collection of both deep and aggressive dubstep tunes, Bean was a great choice to get the night started. Bean set the vibe for the night with a set that focused mostly on deeper and more melodic dubs with the occasional bit of grime. Fans of Sub.mission recognize the deeper flavor of dubstep as the original, proper sound from the UK which helped create many different off shoots of the genre which can be difficult to classify due to the sheer amount of variety. It seems that Bean's opening set established a trend for the night as all of the artists to play after him seemed to choose a blend of deeper dubs and grime for their sets.
Next up on support was Caustik. Caustik has long been a member of Sub.missions resident artists. Part of Sub.mission's Three Wise Men (alongside CurlyOne and Subliminal) Caustik plays on Sub.fm every other Sunday as part of the Sundaze radio show and is our main production manager. Caustiks sets never fail to impress, his extensive knowledge of dubstep and his ability to seamlessly transition between tracks and different styles of music while mixing make him one of my favorite locals to watch perform. I was surprised at how grimey Caustik's set for the night was. While I have seen him include the occasional grime tune in his sets before, he included many more grime tunes then I expected, most of which I have never heard before. During Caustik's set the majority of the crowd began to arrive in anticipation of LX One, and he successfully got the majority of the crowd stuck on the dance floor, skanking out. The energy levels and vibes of the crowd were very high and positive leading all the way up to LX One's performance. Something I think Sub.mission always excels at is creating the appropriate atmosphere for the headliners performances by slowly building the crowds energy and excitement levels with the opening sets.
By the time LX One took to the decks the crowd was beyond ready for the headlining set. Sub.mission decided to do something special for our first official Standard Saturday by bringing out a UK artist who had never played Denver before. It's difficult to give a track by track breakdown of his set due to the sheer amount of unheard and unreleased tunes he rinsed out for us. Dubstep has long been known as a genre to best experience live due to most DJs tendencies to focus on playing exclusive or unreleased material, eschewing the mainstreams tendency to play well known songs. This makes each dubstep night a unique and rewarding experience due to the fact that listeners can expect to hear mostly new tunes every time they go out, and LX One definitely impressed with a set in which I would say the vast majority of the tracks he played were new to most of the crowd. I was also impressed by LX One's high energy during his performance, many times a DJ will simply not display very much enthusiasm while mixing but LX One was skanking out just as hard as the crowd was while behind the decks (when he wasn't busy bringing in fresh heat on the 1s and 2s). There were several moments during the night were he also picked up the mic, MCing over or singing along to the music he was playing, mostly giving a message of positivity and love. At the end of his set he played out "Man Don't Care" by JME featuring Giggs, by this point the crowd was in such a frenzied high energy state that he not only gave the tune a rewind, but was also invited back out by X-TS for one final track. LX One's set was extremely impressive and on point to say the least.
Closing out the night for us was Ind33p. In my opinion Ind33p's main strength as a DJ is his versatility. I never know if his set will be deep dubs, riddim, or agressive and in your face, or even a mixture of all three. Since this night seemed focused heavily on the original dubstep sound, with a steady amount of grime throughout, I think it made sense that Ind33p chose to close the night out with the same vibes due to the crowds high energy and positive response to what had been being played throughout the night. Being the closing DJ is often one of the hardest spots to play in because of the crowds tendency to begin leaving soon after the headliners set. Ind33p however, managed to keep the majority of the crowd engaged and having a fun time for most of the rest of the night. His set hit a high point when LX One came back out to MC during part of his track selection for the night. I think throughout the night each DJ did a very admirable job of mixing seamlessly and returning the crowds energy back to create a very special night at Bar Standard for Standard Saturdays. The next day social media was flooded with appreciation for one of the most proper nights I have seen in Denver's Electronic Music scene lately. Dubstep purists from around the globe would not have been disappointed by the first edition of this new event which reminded me of why many (including myself) consider Dubstep to be more of a cultural movement and less of simply a mere facet of the larger electronic music scene.
