With only a few Electronic Tuesdays left in 2015, Sub.Mission is keeping pace with yet another insane booking. This December 15th, Denver welcomes back the one and only Leon Switch to grace Cervantes Other Side with his dungeon lurking beats. Wielding some of the rawest, darkest music around, his sound is cinematic, industrial, and most of all cathartic. Escaping melodies compliment techy synths, eastern vibes, and vicious growls. His last Denver outing in June 2014 was truly special, as he unloaded his endless collection of mind altering dubs alongside the legendary MC Toast. However, to truly convey the importance of his music it’s important to take a step back and consider his past.
Before dubstep was a thing, Leon Switch produced drum and bass alongside his partner in crime Kryptic Minds, releasing loads of tunes dating back to the turn of the millennium. One day, they decided it was time to move on from drum and bass – and the timing happened to coincide with a transitional period for dubstep. In 2009, the duo slowed down the tempo to 140 under the moniker Kryptic Minds. Combining the sounds of Metalheadz with the rhythms of DMZ, their debut album One of Us on Loefah’s Swamp 81 brought a fresh sound to dubstep that spawned a generation of producers sporting the “dungeon” sound. After years of reign consistently occupying Youngsta’s Minimal Mondays and building their label Osiris Music, the two artists split ways. As the other half Monic held onto Osiris and pursued a path down dark, experimental techno, Leon Switch took back to his original name.
The couple’s break up served as absolutely gutting news. However, at the very start of 2014, a Leon Switch guest mix on Distance’s Chestplate podcast surfaced which contained 30 minutes’ worth of mostly unheard Leon Switch originals. While similar to the music he produced as part of Kryptic Minds, his new music possesses a fresh energy and contains less melancholy, somber feels. The past two years have been filled with Leon Switch guest mixes on outlets such as GetDarker, FatKidonFire, and Fabric. And fortunately, he continues to unsheathe new material that leaves you wanting more. With a two hour time slot set up for Tuesday night, we should get the chance to hear the bulk of this material along with some unheard freshness. Don’t sleep – this one’s gonna be special!
