2016 is about to be a big year for bass music. We’re sure that all the announcements rolling out lately have had your head spinning and your calendars full. No doubt that by now you’ve heard that moving forward into 2016 Sub.mission is partnering with Recon DnB & Language Denver for BASSment Undeground Saturdays in the Club Vinyl Basement and that the first Sub.mission installment is none other than the legendary L-Wiz. It seems dubstep is coming full circle in recent months and that Denver has been the place where the past, present and future of dubstep collide on a frequent basis. With the bass tribes uniting weekly for these BASSment Underground sessions, there are vibes reminiscent of the “Sutra” days lingering in the SoCo district. Those that have been in Denver for a while will remember that Sub.mission used to call the Vinyl basement “home” back in the day and with the past, present and future all seeming meet at the same place lately it only seems fitting that L-Wiz is playing Sub.mission’s first BASSment Underground installment.  With a career and catalog spanning over a decade and a new album out, L-Wiz is the embodiment of the past, present and future of dubstep. So whether you’re a long time fan or you’ve just heard of them, here’s a little preview of what’s to come on January 29th when we return to Vinyl for BASSment Underground. 

Claes Rosén and Ola Näslund, aka L-Wiz, hail from Nynäshamn (Stockholm), Sweden and have been making dubstep since early 2000. After experimenting and making music, drawing influence from the likes of Kromestar, Joker, Coki , Benga and Skream  and adding a bit of house, funk and jazz into the mix, they got in contact with Caspa through the old forum dubplate.net . In 2006 they released “Strength” and the famed Girlfriend EP on the Dub Police label. Those releases were so well received that in 2007 they had five releases on Redvolume, Bare Dubs and Dub Police combined. Among the two Dub Police releases was the tune “Mary Jane” on License to Thrill Part One and the famed “Centurion / Girl From Codeine City”. Each release was an amazing piece of work but “Girl From Codeine City” took the title of L-Wiz’s top release in 2007. Not only was it played by almost every DJ touring that year but it was the second track in the infamous and quintessential Caspa & Rusko Fabric Live 37 Mix. Even if you didn’t know the name of the tune you knew what it was the second it was mixed in. It is definitely one of the major staples in the dubstep sound and for a lot of us, the first time we heard L-Wiz. 

After a string of releases in 2008 L-Wiz joined Swedish artists Irk, Trickykid, Gena, Systematic, I&I, Kalawanji, Chefal and MC Sandor to form All Out Dubstep, a crew and label that became Sweden’s biggest platform for bass music, putting out releases from Swedish artists and arranging club nights and various dubstep nights throughout Sweden. L-Wiz’s first release on All Out was “Mexter Dorgan/Cape Fear” and they followed with “Fight No More” later that year and “Who Am I / Rocks / Lovin In A Lazer Elevator” in 2010 and “Stesolid / Cuffs / GK” in 2011. 2012 saw the release of “Choose Life” on All Out and they also won “Best Dance Artist” @ The National Swedish Radio P3 Guld Awards, which is a pretty big deal because they were the FIRSTdubstep act to win in this category. The following year saw thier All Out releases “Ladda”, “Move To Mars”and the collab with Adam Tensta ”Trouble”. With other releases on labels such as Redvolume, Dub Thiefs, Kapsize, Dank 'N' Dirty Dubz and Surfase Records; L-Wiz has showed no signs of slowing down when it comes to pushing the envelope of the dubstep sound. 

Their newest album, The Orange Tree, is currently out on bandcamp and is being described as an album “fitting for both the cold winter nights and the long summer days.” Tunes like “Experiment” take control of the senses and leave you feeling mindful of the here and now of bass music, where as “Ashes” has an uplifting tone with the perfect ouch of darkness that we all love. The album is laced with familiar stretches of their signature eclectic sound while pulling in fresh sources of inspiration which makes this one of their most unique and well rounded releases to date. This is no surprise coming from a duo that has been in and around the dubstep scene since day one and has not only had a major hand in shaping the genre and the scene but has been a major help in redefining it since its emergence from the underground. Currently they are touring, backed by Sub Concentrate, and playing a ton of their new and old material in live sets. These sets are featuring a hybrid combination of their DJ sets alongside some live keys so be prepared to see a performance unlike any other.
