If there’s any single artist deserving the title of Resident DJ for America’s bass music scene, Antiserum is undeniably the one. The California-based DJ and producer penetrated EDM’s stratosphere through his status as a trap music kingpin - but Antiserum’s roots run deep underground, and to this day, the pioneer’s allegiance lies with the sound.
Antiserum’s mission activated over a decade ago, when he introduced America to the UK dubstep movement via DIY sound system parties in San Francisco. Alongside musical cohorts Roommate and Matty G, Antiserum was the first to bring the underground sound stateside. At these early events, the aggressive, heavier, West Coast-influenced “American Dubstep” sound came to life, and the country’s 140bpm diaspora was born: the start of Sub.mission was directly inspired by the music and experience provided by those nights.
Commercial “brostep” and the EDM explosion catalyzed an unforeseeable paradigm shift for electronic music in America. Still, as the widespread scene separated from its underground roots, Antiserum emerged once again as an artistic innovator. Playing to the party spirit that dubstep awoke in its first generation of EDM-infatuated American fans, Antiserum was among the early producers blending familiar hip-hop elements with dramatic drops and potent sub-bass to spearhead the “Trap” movement that swept the masses next. Through tracks like “Brick Squad Anthem” with Mayhem, Antiserum’s influence was seminal. Once again, the artist wasn’t only ahead of the trends. He broke the trend open, brought it to the fans, and shaped the trajectory of a now-massive music scene.
As a bass music OG and verifiable pioneer, Antiserum’s experience amounts to unimaginable crates, contents containing the story of sound system music in America and beyond. Antiserum assumes his role as a Black Box resident with a history to share. By bringing the best of bass music’s every rendition to The Black Box, the artist steps up as an educator and mentor for a newly-sentient underground scene.
Antiserum kicks off his quarterly residency on Jan. 5th with a celebration of dubstep in its purest form. Joining his journey through the roots of the sound are Sub.mission resident DJs Ind33p, Thanom, and Subliminal, each armed with a personal lore to unleash.
